The topics covered were water, energy & light, resource, IT and processes with expert speakers covering each subject and participants attending three workshop sessions of their choice following the presentations. These practical sessions introduced simple steps and measures to help businesses start or continue to investigate their organisation in some common and not-so-common areas.
This sold out event started with a welcome and introduction from Alan Bailey, Director of the Future Economy Group, who kindly sponsored this event.
Our speaker for resource efficiency and reuse was Steve Sliney MCIWM, Managing Director of Collecteco. Steve talked about maximizing reuse and it’s place in the waste hierarchy as well as the social, environmental and how it can affect the perception of your business.
Covering IT and communications was Dorothy Stein, Managing Director of Greengage IT
Dorothy discussed how IT was often the elephant in the room, using around 7% of global electricity and went through commonly found pieces of equipment and their impact, as well as solutions.
Paul Albone of the Future Economy Group was the presenter for processes, covering how organisations can start to investigate their core processes, from identifying strategic imperatives to evaluating biggest issues and best solutions.
Discussing how all businesses – and households – can improve their relationship with water cost effectively was Samantha Mant, Director of Halcyan Water.
Sam went through the various uses of water within workplaces and how often there are unidentified issues and simple fixes and improvements for toilets, taps, water heaters and boilers, with the impact of limescale commonly ignored but with potentially huge impacts on energy usage.
Energy & Light was covered by Tilly Shaw, Technical Energy Centre Operations Manager, Energy & Technical Services. Tilly said that the building sector has the greatest potential to deliver significant emissions savings with no cost and went on to illustrate how to evaluate your energy use and common payback periods on changes to lighting and buildings systems.
The room then broke into smaller groups for in-depth discussions for direct advice from the presenters and workshops on continuing these investigations and improvements, with each attendee having chosen three sessions in advance.
Other topics that came up in the summary included Travelwest’s current grant scheme. Travelwest can provide match-funded grants to organisations in Bristol to encourage the use of sustainable travel modes by staff. These grants can be used for any kind of initiative – cycle parking, showers, drying rooms, marketing campaigns, green breakfasts, lockers, and any measure aimed at reduced single-occupancy car usage.
